El Jem Amphitheatre: Complete Excursion Guide Tunisia

El Jem Amphitheatre: Complete Excursion Guide Tunisia
El Jem's amphitheatre is one of Tunisia's great surprises: rising from the middle of the Sahel plain, this Roman colossus — 148 metres long and 36 metres high — is the **third largest amphitheatre in the world**, after Rome's Colosseum and Capua. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, it is one of the best-preserved Roman monuments in Africa.
A Brief History: Thysdrus, Capital of Olive Oil
El Jem was known as Thysdrus in antiquity. During the 2nd and 3rd centuries, the city thrived on the olive oil trade — the groves of the surrounding region supplied a substantial portion of the oil consumed in Rome. At its peak, Thysdrus had a population of 30,000–50,000, which justified an amphitheatre of this scale.
The amphitheatre was built around **238 AD**, under the impetus of Gordian I who was proclaimed emperor here. That same year, the city was devastated during the suppression of the Gordian revolt. The monument was never completed.

What to See
The Amphitheatre (2 hours)
The exterior — three superimposed storeys of arcades — is already impressive from the road. Inside:
El Jem Archaeological Museum (1 hour)
Located 200 metres from the amphitheatre, this underrated museum is a real find. It houses a remarkable collection of **Roman mosaics** (2nd–3rd centuries) from Thysdrus villas: hunting scenes, portraits of Dionysus, representations of the seasons. The "Triumph of Neptune" mosaic is particularly striking.
Festivals and Events
El Jem hosts the **International Symphonic Music Festival** each summer (July–August), with concerts held inside the amphitheatre itself. A unique setting in which to hear Mozart or Beethoven resonate under Roman vaults.

**El Jem + Monastir (105 km):** The Ribat of Monastir (8th century) and medina offer an interesting contrast with the Roman monument.
