Kerkouane: The World's Only Intact Punic City — Guide 2026

Kerkouane holds an exceptional title in world archaeology: it is the **only intact pre-Roman Punic city ever discovered**. Unlike Carthage — destroyed by Rome and rebuilt, then destroyed again — Kerkouane was abandoned around **250 BC** during the First Punic War and was never rebuilt. For 2,200 years the site lay dormant under Cap Bon vegetation, until its discovery in 1952. UNESCO inscribed it as a World Heritage Site in **1985** for its absolute uniqueness: here, the Punic urban plan, houses, baths and streets have been preserved without any Roman or medieval superposition.

History in Brief

  • **5th–4th centuries BC:** Foundation and peak of Kerkouane — a Punic trading and craft city
  • **~480 BC:** Probable foundation after the Battle of Himera
  • **~250 BC:** Abandoned during Roman raids of the First Punic War — inhabitants fled, the city was never rebuilt
  • **1952:** Discovery by Tunisian archaeologist Mohammed Hassan Fantar
  • **1985:** Double UNESCO inscription — the city and the necropolis

  • Getting There

Kerkouane is **100 km east of Tunis**, at the tip of Cap Bon, near the town of Kelibia.

    | Departure | Duration | Estimated taxi fare |

    |-----------|----------|---------------------|

    | Tunis city centre | 1h10–1h30 | 60–80 TND return |

    | Nabeul / Hammamet | 50–60 min | 40–55 TND return |

    | Kelibia | 15 min | 12–18 TND return |

**Tip:** Combine Kerkouane with Kelibia (beach and Byzantine fortress) and Nabeul (ceramics, craft market) for a complete Cap Bon day.

    What to See on Site

    The Punic City

The site covers roughly 8 hectares and reveals a remarkably regular urban plan for antiquity. Excavations have uncovered:

  • **Central-patio dwellings:** characteristic Punic layout, with interior courtyard and rooms arranged around it
  • **Domestic baths** with bathtubs in opus signinum — pink tile mortar, characteristically Punic
  • **Paved streets** of standardised width with central gutters
  • **Neighbourhood sanctuaries** (chapels to Tanit)
  • **Workshops:** murex purple dye factories (a luxury dye of antiquity)

  • The Necropolis

A few hundred metres from the main site, the Punic necropolis occupies a coastal hillside. The pit graves and anthropoid sarcophagi (human-shaped, in Greek marble) are among the finest specimens of Punic funerary art.

    The Kerkouane Museum

Small but remarkable, the on-site museum displays objects found during excavations: Tanit stelae, gold jewellery, ceramics, funerary masks, and models reconstructing the appearance of Punic houses. Entry ~8 TND (site + museum included).

**Half day:** Kerkouane site + museum (2h) + Kelibia beach

**Cap Bon day:** Nabeul (market) → Kerkouane → Kelibia (fish lunch, fort) → return via Hammamet

**Archaeological circuit:** Carthage (morning) → Kerkouane (afternoon) → overnight at Kelibia or return to Tunis

    Practical Tips

  • **Hours:** 8:30am–5:30pm, closed Monday
  • **Recommended duration:** 1h30–2h for the site and museum
  • **Footwear:** Walking shoes recommended (uneven terrain)
  • **Shade:** Little shade on site — hat and water essential in summer
  • **Guide:** Site wardens can offer informal explanations; an official guide greatly enriches the visit

  • FAQ

Why is Kerkouane unique in the world?

Because it is the only Punic (Carthaginian civilisation) city that was never rebuilt after its destruction. Carthage, Utica and all other Punic cities were replaced by Roman cities. Kerkouane lay intact for 22 centuries.

Is Kerkouane impressive for a non-specialist?

It is less spectacular than the Antonine Baths or the El Jem amphitheatre, but the historical significance is unique. Read a few pages of Punic history before visiting to fully appreciate its value.

Can you swim near the site?

Kelibia, 15 km away, has a beautiful beach. Kerkouane itself is on the coast but has no direct swimming access.
