Sousse Medina: Complete Visit Guide 2026

Founded in the 9th century by the Aghlabid dynasty, the Sousse Medina has been a **UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988**. Tunisia's third-largest city, Sousse is **140 km south of Tunis** (1h30 by taxi). Its medina — surrounded by largely intact Aghlabid ramparts — contains a remarkable ribat, a 9th-century Great Mosque and a kasbah converted into a museum. Unlike Tunis, the Sousse medina is compact, legible and easily visited in half a day.

History in Brief

  • **9th century:** Construction of the ribat (coastal fort) and Great Mosque by the Aghlabids
  • **827 AD:** The Arab fleet that conquered Sicily departed from Sousse
  • **1881:** French Protectorate; colonial city developed around the medina
  • **1988:** UNESCO inscription of the Sousse medina

  • Getting There

    | Departure | Duration | Estimated taxi fare |

    |-----------|----------|---------------------|

    | Tunis city centre | 1h20–1h40 | 70–90 TND return |

    | Tunis-Carthage Airport | 1h10–1h30 | 65–80 TND return |

**Tip:** From Tunis, combine Sousse and El Jem in one day (El Jem is 90 km south of Sousse). A full-day private taxi is recommended.

    Must-See Sites

    The Ribat (9th century)

The ribat is Sousse's most iconic monument — a square fortress-lighthouse built in 821 AD to guard the coast and shelter monk-warriors (the mourabits). From the watchtower (27 m), the panoramic view over the medina, sea and ramparts is exceptional. Entry ~5 TND.

    The Great Mosque of Sousse

Built around 850 AD under the Aghlabids, the Great Mosque is remarkable for its formal purity: no minaret (a later one stands nearby), a stripped-back colonnaded courtyard. It stands next to the ribat and together they form the historic heart of the medina.

The Kasbah — Sousse Archaeological Museum

The medieval fortress now houses one of Tunisia's finest archaeological museums. The Roman mosaic collection is outstanding, notably the celebrated **Sousse Medaillon** (3rd century AD). Entry ~5 TND.

    The Catacombs of Sousse

Beneath the medina lies a network of early Christian catacombs (2nd–4th century) — one of the largest ancient Christian funerary networks in the world, with over 15,000 recorded tombs. Entry ~4 TND; guided tour recommended.

    The Aghlabid Ramparts

The 9th-century walls almost entirely encircle the medina. Several towers are accessible for a walk along the battlements.

**Half day (3h):** Ribat + Great Mosque + stroll through the souks

**Full day from Tunis:** Depart 8am, Sousse medina (morning) + El Jem (afternoon) + return to Tunis in the evening

**Coastal weekend:** Sousse (Day 1 medina + catacombs) / Monastir ribat + Mahdia (Day 2)

    Practical Tips

  • **Hours:** Ribat and Kasbah open 9am–5pm (closed Monday)
  • **Parking:** Ask your taxi to drop you near Bab el Jedid or Bab el Gharbi — the medina is pedestrian-only
  • **Recommended duration:** 2h30–3h for the main sites
  • **Possible combinations:** El Jem (90 km), Monastir (30 km), Mahdia (80 km)

  • FAQ

Can you visit Sousse from Tunis in one day?

Yes, easily — 1h30 drive. Leave before 8am and you have 6–7 hours on site, enough for the medina and El Jem.

What makes Sousse different from Tunis?

The Sousse medina is more compact and less touristy than Tunis. The ribat is unique and the kasbah museum holds a mosaic collection comparable to (but smaller than) the Bardo.
